Double Intussusceptions with Necrotizing Enterocolitis Diagnosed in a Premature Infant

چکیده
Intussusception in neonates, especially in preterm infants, is rare. Common symp toms of intussusception, which include distended abdomen and gastric residuals, lead to misdiagnosis as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Delayed diagnosis of neo natal intussusception delays treatment as well, which can lead to lifethreatening complications. The predominant location of intussusception in preterm neonates is the small bowel; therefore, ultrasonography is not indicated. We report the case of an 834g male baby born at 25 weeks 6 days of gestation, who was diagnosed with double intussusceptions with NEC.

Effects of Probiotic Lactobacillus Reuteri (DSM 17938) on the Incidence of Necrotizing Enterocolitis in Very Low Birth Weight Premature Infants
Background: Feeding intolerance is a common problem among premature infants. There is limited information on the safety and effects of oral probiotic supplements, especially products containing Lactobacillus reuteri, and the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in low birth weight preterm infants. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Lactobacillus reuteri on the gastrointestinal ...
متن کاملNecrotizing Enterocolitis: A dreadful condition of premature babies
NEC is inflammatory necrosis of intestine with most common site being terminal ileum and ascending colon in preterm babies (1). The condition is typically seen in premature infants, and the timing of its onset is generally inversely proportional to the gestational age of the baby at birth, i.e. The earlier a baby is born, longer is the time of risk for NEC in premature babies. The incidence of ...
متن کاملGastroenteritis with necrotizing enterocolitis in premature babies.
Eleven premature babies developed necrotizing enterocolitis in an epidemic of gastroenteritis and salmonella infection. This occurred in one of two premature baby wards over a period of 10 weeks. All affected babies had severe gastroenteritis and six had salmonella infection. No cases of necrotizing enterocolitis occurred in the unaffected ward during the same period. All other possible factors...
متن کاملNecrotizing enterocolitis and cytomegalovirus infection in a premature infant.
Necrotizing enterocolitis is the most common gastrointestinal emergency in neonates. The etiology is considered multifactorial. Risk factors include prematurity, enteral feeding, hypoxia, and bacterial colonization. The etiologic role of viruses is unclear. We present a case of necrotizing enterocolitis associated with cytomegalovirus and Proteobacteria in a 48-day-old, ex-premature infant and ...
متن کاملColonic stenosis post-necrotizing enterocolitis in term newborn with acquired cytomegalovirus infection.
Necrotizing enterocolitis is a gastrointestinal emergency typical of premature infants. Intestinal strictures infrequently complicate medical or surgical treatment of necrotizing enterocolitis. Postnatal cytomegalovirus infection with gastrointestinal linvolvement has occasionally been described in subjects with necrotizing enterocolitis. We report the case of a full term infant presenting necr...
